We completely understand that most women don’t like to talk about experiencing problems with their pelvic floor, especially their bladder or bowels, but the good news is - Women’s Health Physiotherapy really can help you.
Time to speak up!
Women’s Health is often seen as a bit of a taboo subject, and that’s why so many of us don’t speak up when we are experiencing problems which are actually very common but not normal and can be treated. The additional support of a pessary can decrease or eliminate symptoms associated with pelvic floor problems, such as urinary incontinence in women. If you have been struggling, it’s time to make an appointment with a Women's Health Physiotherapist.
What is a pessary and
can it help you?
A pessary is a medical-grade silicone device that is inserted into the vagina to support the pelvic organs. It is like a
'sports-bra' for your vagina. They come in a range of shapes and sizes so it is essential to be fitted with the right one for you.
What do Pessaries do?
Pessaries offer a safe, non-surgical option for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse (POP). For women living with pelvic organ prolapse, they can help to relieve the symptoms of heaviness or dragging. For women with incontinence, they may help reduce leakage.
Pessaries are a conservative way to treat prolapse and can be used by the majority of women. Most pessaries are designed to be taken in and out by the user (after being fitted for one by your specialist trained Pelvic Health Physio). You can use it just for exercise or for everyday life.
How does a Pessary help?
Research suggests that wearing a pessary can help to reduce prolapse symptoms of intravaginal pressure.1
Research also suggests that wearing a pessary can help to reduce the grade of prolapse by reducing the passive stretch on the ligaments supporting the pelvic organs.2
How is a pessary fitted?
It is essential to be fitted for a pessary by a Women's Health Physiotherapist, Obstetrician or Gynaecologist who is trained in pessary fitting. Correct fitting should relieve or reduce your symptoms, allow you to void and defecate, stays in place with activity and does not cause pain or discomfort.
Can I fit a Pessary in and out myself?
Depending on the type of pessary you are fitted with, you can choose whether to wear your pessary all the time or just for exercise. You can also take it out for intercourse or during menstruation.
