Pregnancy Massage
Pregnancy is such a special and exciting time in a woman's life, but let’s face it, it can also come with its fair share of discomfort and stress. That's where a pregnancy massage can be an absolute blessing! It's a gentle and effective form of massage therapy specifically tailored to meet the needs of expectant mothers.
As your baby grows, your body goes through all sorts of changes, and that can lead to discomfort in areas like your back, hips, pelvis and legs. Some women may also experience, shortness of breath, ankle swelling and carpal tunnel symptoms in their wrists.
Specialised care for you & your baby
The highly skilled massage therapists at HLP Therapy, know the perfect techniques to relieve tension and provide much-needed relief from these complaints. Growing a human is hard work! You deserve the very best in specialised care, to help you in your pregnancy.
Did we mention? Receiving regular massages during the second and third trimester, can potentially result in easier and shorter births (as the body is more relaxed and prepared for delivery).
Benefits of Pregnancy Massage
Of course, it’s not just about soothing aches and pains, pregnancy massage is beneficial in so many other ways too! Take a look below to see just a few reasons why we love it so much:
-
Improved mental wellbeing. Being pregnant can be an emotional rollercoaster, but taking some time for yourself to unwind and recharge can make a world of difference. Pregnancy massage can help you relax and reduce stress levels, which has a positive impact on your mood and connection with your body.

-
Improved Circulation. Your body is working hard to accommodate your growing baby and this can put pressure on other areas of the body. Our holistic and specialised massages can help stimulate blood flow, reducing swelling in your hands and feet and thus improving your overall circulation. You’ll feel more energised and refreshed afterwards!

-
Better sleep quality. Some pregnant mums struggle with finding a comfortable sleeping position which can lead to restless nights. Receiving massages during pregnancy can help relax you, connect with your body and clear your mind – making it easier to drift off for a good night’s sleep.

-
Improved hormone balance. As an expectant mother, our hormone levels will alter in every phase of pregnancy. This is the same for our anxiety and stress levels too! The good news is that our pregnancy massages not only relax those tight muscles, but can stimulate endorphins which are your body’s “feel-good” hormones. As a result, your hormones become more balanced and so your mood tends to lift.

-
Improved Posture. While your baby grows, your posture will change and adapt, to accommodate this change. Also, your center of gravity completely changes during this time! A change in posture can lead to increased tension on your muscles and joints – this is where a pregnancy massage can really help. With all that muscle tension, a pregnancy massage can relax tight muscles and support better posture.

Postnatal Massage
Your body has been through a LOT, regardless of the birth you’ve had. In fact, it’s not uncommon for new mums to have aches & pains in their neck, shoulders, back or hips. Your body is once again adapting to hormone, posture and muscular changes. This is where postnatal massage can really help!
First of all, let’s talk about those aches and pains…. You’ve been pregnant for up to 9 months, been through your birth experience and are now establishing feeding (bottle or breastfeeding). Your sleep patterns may have altered too. This is a lot to go through (and let us tell you, you’re doing a great job). Sometimes you may find yourself in awkward feeding positions, which can leave your body feeling sore and tender. This can be in your neck, shoulders and back, but it could affect any part of your body. It’s for this reason that the team here at HLP Therapy customise postnatal massage for every mum. Our holistic approach means that every massage therapy session is different depending on your needs.
You don’t even need to experience any aches or pains to have a postnatal massage! It’s so important, that in the busyness of newborn life, you are not forgotten about. To look after yourself, is looking after your baby. It is not selfish taking some well deserved time out for yourself.
Benefits of Postnatal Massage
There are of course, many reasons why having postnatal massages are really beneficial. We’ve listed just a few reasons below.
-
It supports healing. Having a postnatal massage improves your blood circulation which in turn reduces swelling and inflammation. Not only that, but it also stimulates endorphins – which are natural chemicals in your body to make you feel good.

-
Hormone regulation. As mentioned, your hormones change quite drastically during and after pregnancy. This can effect how we think and feel. Having a postnatal massage helps balance your hormones including cortisol (the stress hormone), prolactin (the hormone responsible for milk production) and oxytocin (the hormone linked to happiness and bonding).

-
Improves posture. Your body does an amazing job of adjusting to accommodate a growing baby and then once born – carrying and feeding your baby in various positions can produce muscle and joint ache. This takes a toll on your body and can influence your posture. The good news is that a postnatal massage brings your body back into alignment to correct your posture.

Pregnancy & Postnatal Massage FAQ's
Is it safe to massage a pregnant belly?
Yes, but you should wait until after your first trimester (12 weeks). Pregnancy massage is very gentle and regular massages in your second trimester can even potentially result in easier and shorter births! Pregnancy massages are performed with you laying on your side – so there is no risk of harming the baby.
How soon after giving birth can I get a Postnatal Massage?
We would generally recommend around 6 weeks after birth. However, this can depend on the type of birth you had and how your body is recovering. Please do contact us to ask if you have any questions.
How long does a pregnancy massage last?
60 minutes. This takes place at our clinic in Leicester.
